DESCRIPTION
The project 7°Ling8 was inspired after an encounter with asylum seekers – young North-African men in their twenties and thirties – who had been living in the Italian Red Cross Centre in Settimo Torinese. This accommodation measure was introduced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the early months of 2011 to deal with the refugee crisis from Libya. The activities concentrate on two fronts: firstly on developing orientation devices in a workshop designed to provide a greater understanding of the territory through the formulation of geographical perception and the use of space. Participants reflected on the connection between the city centre and the suburbs, then reverse. The aim is to draw up a talking map of the territory, gathering the experiences of those who had come as migrants, offering such a map as an instrument for future reference.
At the same time, in his meetings with these young men, the author Cristiano de Majo had worked on writing a meta-biographical tale in order to give a voice to the real-life experiences of asylum seekers.
Project in collaboration with: the Italian Red Cross Centre in Settimo Torinese, municipality of Settimo Torinese and its Association Casa dei Popoli, Artissima, The Faculty of Sociology in Turin.
