DESCRIPTION

Eco e Narciso. Cultura Materiale/Video involved 8 artists who have worked with 7 eco-museums in the province of Turin. Using video as their artistic language, they have conveyed the themes, memories, and aims of each eco-museum, involving the local territory and its community. By acquiring experience of the past as an opening for the future, the eco-museum can be made to resonate beyond its actual presence and, as George Baker puts it, “the attunement of the viewer and the viewed, of self and other, and of history and the present”. The starting point is history, but the result does not come in the form of narrative or documentary videos. The videos produced had entered the Videoteca collection of GAM (Modern Art Gallery in Turin). Eco e Narciso / Video included activities for college students: the programme ranged from historical and critical studies to video techniques, with visits to some of the key locations for the production and promotion of video in Turin. In May 2010 the artists were at the centre of a series of public meetings at GAM. The videos had been shown with site-specific installations inside the participating eco-museums and screening in Turin in 2010 during both Artissima and TFF Turin Film Festival. In 2011 GAM hosted the videos in a series of exhibitions.
